Team Falcon Ridge takes the 2012 Commish’s Cup at Casselview Golf & Country Club
First-ever guest team to take the cup in tournament’s six year history

July 17, 2012 – Casselman, Ontario. 10 teams of 12 golfers attacked Casselview Golf & Country Club’s freshly cut and rolled greens in a quest to dethrone the 2010-2011 champions, Slammer Team East, but in the end, captain Gabe Louli (Ticklar) and Team Falcon Ridge came out on top with 53 points, five more than runners-up Slammer Team South.

This was Team Falcon Ridge’s second attempt to secure the cup, after placing 3rd in 2011. Members/pairings for Team Falcon Ridge are – with their Slammer nicknames in brackets, where applicable: Gabe Louli (Ticklar) & Al Ganier; Ryan Spratt & Farzin Hanifi (SpinMaster); Bob Davis & Phil Dugan; John Burke & Mike Pilon; Dave Turnbull & Stephen Brown; Jerry Stewart (Chilly) & Rick Lefvere.

Conducted by Executive Golf, The Commish's Cup is The Slammer Tour’s most significant team event of the season with players from both inside and outside of The Slammer Tour itself. The event is always held in mid-July at Casselview Golf & Country Club. It’s a match-play competition consisting of a two-person scramble, followed by a two-person best ball, and two singles’ matches. Each partner team had the chance to generate as many as 14 points and overall results are combined 12-person team totals: two for the partner scramble; four for the partner best ball; and two for both single’s matches (total of four per player).

“All teams had combined scoring averages of 85 or more in order to be eligible”, said Jamie Ryan, Executive Golf president. “This levels the playing field and keeps the event open for players of all skill levels.” And even with the recent drought, Casselview was in great shape, according to Ryan: “As always, Casselview’s large greens were impeccable and the ball was rolling beautifully.”

Notably, Slammer Team Central’s scoring average was the highest – coming into the event – and although they were expected to come in dead last, they tied for fourth. According to Central’s Captain Terry Benson (T-Bone), “I think we shocked those who thought they’d have a cakewalk with us because our secret weapon is tons of match-play experience. We know this game.”

Five guest teams brought their own teams and competed in 2012. Slammer Tour members battled each other in the weeks leading up to the event to earn a spot on the team by achieving a top rank within their region, or were acquired as a captain’s picks.
