It's hard to believe, but the Ottawa Sun Scramble City Champinship Week is moving on up again.The region's biggest golf event has grown from two single-round events in 2005 to a major week-long festival of golf with 648 spots for competitors, in 11 partner events.
And you don't have to be a pro to play. Different divisions allow for golfers to compete alongside others who score similarly.
Direct tournament registration opens March 1, but competitors who made the cut in 2011 (in any division) can register immediately at ottawasunscramble.com. The 2012 tournament offers two new classes at both ends of the spectrum: the GolfWorks A and D Division City Championships.
"The Ottawa-Gatineau golf market is huge," said tournament director and president of Executive Golf, Jamie Ryan. "We want to give everyone an opportunity to experience competition at their own level and that's why we continue to refine the divisions, to keep it as competitive as possible."
The 2011 championships saw a major upset when, after winning seven straight Open titles, Allen McGee and Kyle Koski were knocked off their perch by newcomers Curtis Dancy and Robert Mustard who won by four strokes.
Both teams intend to return.

January 24, 2012 – Ottawa, Ontario. The biggest golf event in the region, Ottawa Sun Scramble City Championship Week, has grown from just two single-round events in 2005 to a major weeklong festival of golf with an expected 700 competitors in 11 partner events targeting every type of golfer, from beginner to professional.
Direct tournament registration opens March 1, 2012; however, competitors who made the cut in 2011 (in any division) can register as of today at ottawasunscramble.com.
The 2012 tournament offers two new classes at both ends of the spectrum: the GolfWorks A and D Division City Championships. “The Ottawa-Gatineau golf market is huge”, said tournament director and president of Executive Golf, Jamie Ryan. “We want to give everyone an opportunity to experience competition at their own level and that’s why we continue to refine the divisions, to keep it as competitive as possible. The 2011 championships saw a major upset when after winning six straight Open titles, Allen McGee and Kyle Koski finally met their match with newcomers Curtis Dancy and Robert Mustard who won by four strokes after round two at Eagle Creek. 2012 promises to be tense as both teams intend to return.
“Robert and I will most definitely be back to defend the title,” said Dancy. “Last year was our first time in the tournament and we had an absolute blast. Our goal is to better our winning score. It seems like a longshot as we both played near perfect golf, but it's another year and anything can happen.”
McGee was more to the point, and slightly less humble: “We will be there and we will not lose!”
Ryan explained the decision for splitting up the upper field into Open and A divisions: “We want all divisions to be as competitive as possible and since we’re seeing more professionals enter the tournament, the need to create another class has become apparent. The Flagstick Open is now only for pros and amateurs with handicap factors of 3.9 or less or scoring averages of 77 or less. The new GolfWorks A Division is for amateurs with handicap factors between 4.0 and 9.9 or scoring averages between 78 and 84.”
“We are excited about becoming the title sponsor of the Open Division,” said Jeff Bauder, president and publisher of Flagstick Golf Magazine. “It’s no secret that this has become one of the most talked about events on the calendar and the Open Division delivers a lot of drama. Flagstick will be able to add even more hype through our many promotional avenues and we can't wait to help elevate this event to an even higher level through this new partnership.”
The rationale for a D Division (100+ scoring average) has also become clear, especially considering the vast majority of public golfers are not A or even B-classers. “Competition is relative. All competitors now have a legitimate chance to win their division,” said Ryan.
The tournament was first launched in 2005 with an Open and Senior event at Eagle Creek Golf Club, but now offers 10 two-round partner divisions plus the Régimbal Media Challenge and three qualifying events.
The event is conducted by local golf promotion company, Executive Golf (executivegolf.ca), and is a scramble format where both players take a shot and the best of the two is used, from the tee box, on the fairway, in the rough, in bunkers, hazards and on the green.
All divisions are two-round events with a cut after the first (excluding the Media Challenge) and teams that make the cut play for their respective city title on either Championship Saturday at Club de Golf Outaouais (Promomedia B, Absolute Comedy C, D and Ladies C) or Championship Sunday at Eagle Creek Golf Club (Flagstick Open, Ladies, Ladies B, Investors Group Senior, Junior Open and the GolfWorks A).
Executive Golf provides over $30,000 in EG Memberships (any competitor who makes the cut receives a $285 membership to Executive Golf), along with more than $15,000 in sponsor prizing for the top finishers and contest winners. There are cash prizes for the top professionals.
Also returning for 2012 is the “Bud Light Million Dollar Ace” where competitors and members of the public have a chance to be drawn to shoot for the loot during Royal Oak Kick-Off Day at Falcon Ridge Golf Course on August 3rd. This pre-tournament event includes a skills and tricks clinic, Slammer Tour match-play events, the Media Challenge, an outdoor golf show and a host of contests and other events. Kick-Off Day is free for the public to attend.
