Two aces in two days on the same hole!

... at Smuggler’s Glen during Golf-O-Max Get-Away
Terry Kuzma and Gord Pickup inducted into EG Hall of Fame

November 3, 2011 – Ottawa, Ontario. As rare as it may be, two participants on a this annual weekend golf trip hit perfect shots on the same hole (#16) at the picturesque Smuggler’sGlen Golf Course in Gananoque over the October 22-23 weekend.

First up, on Saturday, was Executive Golf Member Gord Pickup, with a 128-yard 8-iron. Because it was a shotgun event, this was his last hole for the day and because daylight is scarce in late October, Pickup did not get to see the result of his great shot. “I thought I hit it a little long and a little left,” he said. “But then (playing partners) Ian, Randeen and Donna started screaming ‘It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!’” Pickup made his ace with a Callaway ball.

Terry Kuzma, a.k.a. “Cuba”, was next on Sunday with a pitching wedge from 108-yards. Amazingly, he had hit the same wedge the day before but was eight yards long, behind the hole. On Sunday, the pin had been moved back exactly eight yards and the conditions were virtually identical to that of Saturday’s round, so club selection didn’t require much internal negotiation. “It was obvious,” said Kuzma. “Why wouldn’t I just make the same shot?” Lucky for Terry, he was playing in an optional Slammer Tourmatch-play event, under the name “Cuba”, and took home a skin and a “doggie” (Slammer Tour lingo for closest-to-the-pin). This was Terry’s first-ever ace and he performed his perfect golf shot with a Titleist ball and a Taylor Made wedge.

Nicknamed “Shorty”, hole #16 at Smuggler’s Glen is a picturesque par-three where everything slopes to the right towards two big bunkers, thick forest and a gorge of death. Depending on your choice of tee blocks, the distance ranges from 88-128 yards. Pickup canned the shot from the tips and Kuzma from the blue tees.

“We’ve run this weekend get-away since 2007 and have never had a single ace,” said Executive Golf president, Jamie Ryan. “But wouldn’t you know it; here we have a two-in-one – on the same hole.”

The Smuggler’s Glen get-away is sponsored by Ottawa indoor club Golf-O-Max but organized by Executive Golf. Since 2007, it has grown into a highly-anticipated autumn event with 75 participants playing two rounds of their choice of social or competitive golf formats, and overnight accommodations and a Saturday dinner at the Glen House Resort. In addition to the many prizes awarded over the weekend, Golf-O-Max also provides every participant with a complimentary round at their indoor facility on Baxter Rd.

Executive Golf is a virtual golf club that allows its members to play 40+ Ottawa-Gatineau courses and conducts year-round social and competitive events, including The Slammer Tour, a variety of leagues and golf get-aways and the Ottawa Sun Scramble.

Pickup and Kuzma have been inducted into the EG Hall of Fame.
Congratulations!

Mark Papousek and Bob Radmore win the 2011 Media Challenge and take home the Régimbal Cup!

Radio guys dialled in to win at Ottawa Sun Scramble
By Bruce Garrioch, Ottawa Sun
Friday, August 5, 2011

The Regimbal Cup has a new home.

Mark Papousek, the legendary morning show host from country station Y101, and playing partner Bob Radmore pulled off the upset Friday with a sizzling 2-under 70 at the challenging 6,288-yard Falcon Ridge layout.

At the Royal Oak kickoff day for the Ottawa Sun Scramble, Papousek and Radmore wrestled the media title away from ‘A’ Ottawa’s Kurt Stoodley and Mike Pang, who finished at 1-over.

The Bud Light Million Dollar Ace! August 5 at Falcon Ridge

Chance to Scramble for a million
By Don Brennan, Ottawa Sun

Local golf’s version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire will once again help get the ball rolling for Ottawa Sun Scramble City Championship Week.

Nine people who are 19 and over — at least three of whom will be selected from the general public admitted free to the event — will get a chance to strike it rich by acing a 165-yard hole at Falcon Ridge Aug. 5.
If lightning hits more than once, then there will be multiple millionaires going home from the course. And while no winner has claimed the jackpot in six years, there has been a close call.

“In the second year we had it at Eagle Creek, and a lady who won her spot through the Sun had no experience,” remembered tournament director Karl Parks. “She took a one-hour lesson from (then-head pro) Darryl Lepage, then hit a shot that missed the pin by six inches, it rolled two feet past the cup. That’s the closest we’ve had.”

A putting contest ($5 donation to Make-A-Wish for a ticket in a draw that gives the winner a 65-foot shot at $5,000), discounted buckets of balls (any size for a $2 donation), a chipping contest and a ‘Trick Shot And Skills Clinic’ put on by the CPGA’s Colin Orr will also be part of the Royal Oak Kick-Off Day at Falcon Ridge, as will a Tommy & Lefebvre “9 and Dine,” plus morning and afternoon Slammer Tour Events sandwiched around the Regimbal Media Challenge.

May 5, 2011.

Promomedia Group partners with Executive Golf to boost golf market in Ottawa-Gatineau.
New “Corporate Challenge” event will pit company against company as part of the deal.

May 5, 2011 – Ottawa, Ontario. Promomedia Group (promomedia.com), one of Eastern Canada’s largest promotional firms, has signed a major two-year sponsorship agreement with Ottawa-based Executive Golf (executivegolf.ca) to enhance the profile of golf in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

In the deal, Promomedia will take over sponsorship of three already existing events and will work with Executive Golf to introduce the inaugural “Promomedia Group Corporate Challenge” to the region’s business community. This one day event, slated for autumn 2011, will attract the top four competitive golfers from different companies to battle it out in match-play competition. Individual businesses will appoint their own team members.

“We’ve had this corporate challenge on the drawing board for a few years now,” said Jamie Ryan, Executive Golf President. “The demand is clearly there and I guess we just needed the right partner to make it happen, and Promomedia’s enthusiasm for the event made it clear that that time has arrived.”

The event takes place at Loch March Golf & Country Club on September 13, 2011. Interested companies can sign up online at executivegolf.ca/promomedia.

According to Promomedia President & CEO, Dan Rochette, the Corporate Challenge is just one part of a much broader picture. “We’ve been looking for an opportunity like this for a while. Just by the nature of our line of business, we already know most of the region’s marketing and advertising people – so recruiting teams is going to be the easy part. When you combine that with Executive Golf’s own marketing reach and tournament management skills, I’m certain this event will turn into a major staple in the region’s golf scene.”

In addition to the Promomedia Group Corporate Challenge, Promomedia will take over title sponsorship of the following events:

Ottawa Sun Scramble Promomedia B-Class City Championship. The biggest division of Ottawa Sun Scramble City Championship Week (the region’s largest golf event), which is now entering its 7th season – and held in August at multiple golf courses throughout Ottawa and Gatineau.

Ottawa Sun Scramble Promomedia Closest-To-The-Pin. This contest for competitors in all nine divisions is a 50/50 with the winner taking half the pot, and the other half going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario.

The Slammer Tour Promomedia B-Class Tour Championship. Also entering its 7th season, this event is a season-long elimination match-play event where the field is cut in half after each round, until one player survives and takes the championship.

The overall mission of Executive Golf is to promote the sport of golf in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, and key to success in this area is to recognize and appeal to all types of golfers.

“We have some of the Canada’s best players, right here,” says Ryan, “but we also have a huge number of beginners and social golfers, and, of course, everything in between.”

While the Promomedia Group Corporate Challenge targets players who crave competition and networking, Executive Golf conducts programs and events that are specificallydesigned for every type of golfer, including beginners, juniors, ladies, seniors, non-serious social players and hard-core competitors.

Since 1999, Promomedia Group has grown into one of the largest promotional firms in Eastern Canada. They provide high-quality brandable promotional items through their Signature Collection and base their reputation on knowing what products offer the best return for different market segments. The company is located in east Ottawa on Canotek Rd. and has 23 employees who service clients throughout Canada and the United States.
